“Planting Seeds at Seeds of Love”

By Nancy
In late November three of our teachers will be attending a two week teacher training, developed by Oneness, a Canadian non profit.  ”Planting Seeds” is an early childhood education program developed by Susan Schmaltz, co-founder of Oneness. Susan and, her husband, Richard founded Oneness in 2003, their mission statement: “Oneness is a spiritually based organization, established in 2003, to promote, encourage, support and assist those seeking ways to serve others. We aspire to unite men and women who care to address the overwhelming problems of the human condition”“Oneness” has several preschool programs in Guatemala and Semillas de Amor has been fortunate to be chosen to have our teachers trained with Susan and her team.  In January, we hope, to open our doors to preschoolers, ages 3-5.  Our target group will be the poorest children in Parramos.  Our goal is to serve those children whose parents are unable to send them to even a public school because of the expense.  Families will be expected to participate in co-op work at the school and will not be required to pay for their child’s education.Chronic malnutrition is a huge problem in Guatemala.  Those children that don’t die from starvation generally suffer from chronic malnutrition.  A large population of children in Guatemala never have enough food or nutrients.  Part of our early childhood education program will be to provide two meals and two snacks a day to the children.  We can’t feed the minds of children if we don’t feed their little bodies.

Our current goal is to develop our education program so that we can move up one grade level each year.  This will depend on funding, teacher training and the success of our first year.

As we develop our school and our student population grows we will be in need of school supplies.  These are supplies that we either cannot obtain in Guatemala or the prices are so high that it is just not affordable.  During this time we would be eager to have donations of school supplies for our kids that live at Semillas de Amor as well as our new students.  Gently used supplies as well as new supplies are appreciated.  All items with an ” * ” we can purchase in Guatemala with donated funds.
