The Friday Caminata (hike)
ByOur kids count the days for the hike on Friday. Everybody is ready to go, no laggers, ever, nobody wants to be left behind. Friday’s hike was up into the mountains on a foggy, cool day. As always the kids came home with lots of treasures and many things for us to plant at the children’s homes. Dooney continues to be a good sport carrying all the treasures in his backpack but it appears we may need another pack for one of the other dogs since the kids find so many goodies. The kids are learning about nature, what plants are growing in our area, what kinds of animals live nearby and to care for and not smash insects, we need them. Bodhi is chief of security with the other four dogs his back up. Friday’s hike is the highlight for the week. The office and teaching staff are gone on Saturday and Sunday so Friday is a day to make sure the kids get lots of attention, lots of love and stimulation to get them through the weekend.
You will see in the photos that we have quite a number of tree climbers! Nothing seems to be out of reach for our kids. We have walkie talkies and although the kids are never out of eyesight they have fun with those and the compass to see what direction they are heading. Sometimes we surprise the campesinos in the fields when we come upon them. We are quite a large group and then two huge dogs and three smaller ones can be a little frightening. We hope, at some point, to bring one of our horses to the children’s home to live who can also go on hikes with us. Maybe he can be our pack horse and carry the water and snacks. The kids never tire out, they are full of energy. And they do come home dirty from tree climbing, hunting for prey in the bushes and the occasional fall. But they always come home happy.
As always we thank our generous donors for keeping our doors open, our kids fed, clothed, loved and educated. We continue to need generous donors to help us. Every donation is important and counts. You can donate via our website.
We hope you enjoy the photos and the smiles of our children.

Love the pictures. What a neat learning experience for the kids! We started hiking as a family last fall and have thoroughly enjoyed that time together. I am so glad the Semillas kids get to have such incredible experiences!

Reba, it is really a wonderful way to get to know your kids. Quiet, no interruptions and surrounded by nature. We are going to start bringing a picnic lunch .

Hi Heather,
It is amazing how quickly the kids grow and what a limited amount of time we have to really make a difference in their lives. Hope we will be neighbors before too long. The months are ticking away……
