Futuro de los Niños Raises Funds for Semillas de Amor to “Go Green”

Our friends at Futuro de los Niños raised over $3000.00 to help Semillas de Amor “go green”. With this funding we have been able to buy the very tall poles we need to install our solar lamps. The solar lamps will not only provide lighting but will provide us security at night. We were able to build our new worm hotel and purchase worms. We are expecting our worms any day now. We were able to build a compost area for our food and paper waste, stock up on sawdust, to keep the chicken coop clean and warm, and buy extra chicken food. We have been wanting, for quite some time, to change our lighting from regular bulbs to LED but LED is expensive. With the funding we were able to purchase many LED bulbs which will keep our electric bill down as well as use less energy. One of the things I have found is that by “going green” it can be expensive. The start up costs can seem overwhelming but once the system is in place we save money and also help save our planet. Our kids have learned about composting, how worms turn garbage into rich fertilizer, recycling, making sure garbage is thrown away in a garbage can and not on the ground, how their hot water is heated by the sun with our solar hot water heaters and so many of their vegetable come right from our own garden and soon to be fertilized by our worm fertilizer.
