New, Green Light Movement

Posted by: Nancy | Comments (0)

Semillas de Amor is looking for your help to become more environmentally friendly and to reduce our monthly electric bill.  After in depth research, we’ve decided to use LED bulbs because the more efficient and green than both CFL (Compact Fluorescents) and Incandescent bulbs.

  • LED bulbs use about 1/3 of the power of CFLs; 1/30th of the power of incandescents
  • LED bulbs do not contain any hazardous substances such as mercury.  CFLs do!
  • LED bulbs have a lifespan greater than 50,000 hours – more than 17 years if you use them 8 hours/day!

Yes, LED bulbs are more expensive than the rest but the prices have come down significantly and it will cost only $4000 to light our whole project with LEDs.  Once we are fully LED lit, we’ll save more than $150 per month on our electricity bill.

Semillas de Amor is finishing up the last steps to move to our new home located on 4 acres in Parramos, just outside of the beautiful, colonial town of Antigua, Guatemala.  We need your support to buy 100 gallons of paint to put the finishing touches on our beautiful, new home.  We’ve chosen the colors and calculated material requirements, we just need your help to buy the materials.  Thanks for your support of our program and kids!

This year the children at Semillas de Amor were blessed with not one but two wonderful Christmas parties. December 23rd Santa arrived loaded with gifts for the children. The Cooper Family Foundation and Futuro de los Ninos Foundations funded and organized the Christmas party. Thank you to both Foundations for your continued support of Semillas de Amor.

What a party! New shoes, sweatshirts, socks, toys, McDonald’s, cupcakes. We had a blast! Bodhi and Dooney, our Tibetan Mastiffs loved the party but were not happy when the clown (as clowns will do) got a bit too close and threatening to Santos. I was a bit afraid that we might have clown parts strewn around the yard but all went well. Good to know that we are well protected.

Thank you to everyone who hosted the party; Gary, Ellora, Mary, John and Chrissy.
