“Semillas de Amor, Changing lives through Education”

Evelin and Dooney
Education is free and compulsory for six years in Guatemala. However, most of the time there is no one watching. Children who do not attend school are in the rural, mostly indigenous areas. Although free children must pay for their uniforms, school supplies and textbooks. This often is a deal breaker for most families, since they have more than one child attending school.
Statistics state that the literacy rate in Guatemala is 30% but the question one must ask is what is the quality of literacy when the average years in school are 4? How literate is a fourth grader educated in a substandard education system? How critically does a 4th grader think? Only 3 out of 10 children graduate from the 6th grade. Guatemala has the lowest literacy rate in all of Latin America and only 2% of Guatemalans attend college, half of those graduate.
Celebrating our Amazing Teachers and our June Birthday Babies!

June 25th is officially TEACHER’S DAY in Guatemala. Semillas de Amor celebrated our teachers and our June birthdays on Friday the 24th. We had lots of food, cake, presents and beautiful handmade cards. Our kids have never bought a card (watch out Hallmark) only give handmade cards. That is true as well for Gaby who is almost 16. She would never think of buying a card. It is an act of love to make a very special card for the person you are honoring and celebrating. Happy teacher’s day to our amazing teachers, Lisbeth, Hugo, Alicia, Paola, Syliva and Luvia. We are so grateful to you for the wonderful work you do with our children everyday. Read More→
