…and now there is light!
Posted by: | CommentsA huge thank you to the Helen Bader Foundation for their generous grant that allowed us to purchase five solar street lamps and posts. We purchased the solar lights a few years ago and had a very difficult time finding the right people to install them for us. The Guatemala 2012 Wisconsin Work Team just happened to be the right group. With lots of labor, sweat, frayed nerves the solar lights went up. These lamps are on all night and provide us with much needed security. Because they are solar we don’t run up an already expensive electric bill. Solar is beautiful! Thank you so much to the Helen Bader Foundation and our Guatemala 2012 Wisconsin Work team, both groups, by the way, are from Wisconsin!
The Importance of Celebrations
Posted by: | Comments
Celebrations are an important part of childhood. Celebrations build family memories. The children at Semillas de Amor do not have “typical families”. The children are part of a large family, 25 brothers and sisters. Sometimes being one of 25 can be overwhelming and a child’s identity gets lost amongst the group. We work very hard to make sure that does not happen and that each child is seen as an individual. We want to know our children’s strengths and vulnerabilities so that we can help each child achieve their full potential. Needless to say this takes a good deal of time, energy and financial support. The positive impact we make, on a daily basis, with our kids will lead them to bright futures. Our goal is to break the cycle of poverty that the vast majority of children in Guatemala suffer. Healthy food, quality education, stimulation, critical thinking, fresh air, freedom, physical activities, consistent rules, love and celebrating our children will lead our kids away from poverty and despair, having too many children, who will also live in poverty, and into a future of opportunities and choices.

School is in session, oh wait, school is always in session at Semillas de Amor. However, mid January started the new school year in Guatemala. At Semillas the kids go to school year round, from 8am to 4PM, other than academics, the kids take swimming, music and art lessons. They have a very busy schedule and are eager learners.
